WYANDOTTE - The Wyandotte Bears show they mean business.
Senior quarterback Tate Smith bulled his way into the end zone from 2 yards out with 18 seconds remaining to give WHS a 12-6 victory over Kansas in the District 2A-7 opener for both teams.
"These kids deserve every win they get," Wyandotte head coach Scott Martin said. "They paid the price. They worked their butts off. I am proud of them. This is awesome."
The win was the fourth straight for the 11th-ranked Bears - their best start since 2007 - while Kansas suffered its first loss.
The Comets nursed a 6-0 lead into the fourth quarter, turning back scoring bids by WHS that reached the Kansas 11 just before intermission and the 2-yard line in the third quarter.
The Bears finally got the equalizer with 10 minutes remaining in the game on a 3-yard blast by Dalton Cummings, who wound up getting 210 yards on a whopping 42 carries.
A 16-yard pass from Smith to Brady Barrett on fourth-and-8 pumped new life into the drive, then Andrew Douthit plowed ahead for 3 on a third-and-1 call to set up Cummings' TD.
The PAT kick by Martin Torres went wide left.
A fumble recovery by Mitchell Weisinger with 4:00 remaining set the wheels in motion for the game-winning score.
The Bears were content to keep the ball on the ground, running 11 plays. They converted on fourth down twice and overcame a holding penalty.
Smith used second and third effort to get into the end zone with the go-ahead touchdown.
Cummings was tackled by defensive end Chris Boster on the conversion attempt.
The Comets used a hook-and-lateral to net 8 yards on the first play following the ensuing kickoff, then a Hail Mary attempt by quarterback Logan Blaine was intercepted by Ryan Garrett.
"It was a great effort out of the whole team believing we can win," Martin said.
Kansas had grabbed a 6-0 lead at 8:46 of the first quarter on a 73-yard touchdown romp by Cody Bright.
The extra-point kick by Dylan Collyge was blocked.
The only time the Comets reached midfield in the second half was their final possession of the game.
The Bear ground out 249 yards rushing on 62 attempts. Barrett's 42 totes was almost double Kansas' total on the night (24) and exceeded the Comets' rushing yardage (146).
Smith completed 8 of 15 passes for 58 yards.
Barrett, Garrett and Douthit had two catches each for 26, 13 and 9 yards, respectively.
