Miami wants to make up for last year this weekend when it begins play in the American Legion 3A district tournament at Joe Pollock Field.
Post 147 (16-2) hosts Grove and Vinita beginning Friday.
However, it's technically a battle between Grove and Miami since Vinita already has a berth in the state tournament as the host team.
Miami was poised to make a solid bid for a state tournament berth last summer. It swept Poteau 4-3 and 15-14 in regional play here, but had to bow out after not having enough players to compete in the state meet.
“They are pretty excited - they want to make up for last year,” Miami coach Chad Ross said. “Numbers are not a problem this year. We've had good numbers all season.”
Grove and Vinita tangle in Friday's 3 p.m. opener
Following a format used in the three-team high school playoffs, Post 147 meets the Grove-Vinita loser at about 5:30 p.m.
Miami meets the Grove-Vinita winner at about 8 p.m.
The championship game will be at 6 p.m. Saturday. The “if necessary” game will follow at about 8 p.m.
Post 147 owns a 3-2 victory over Grove on June 5, but a scheduled meeting with Vinita in the Miami True Value Home Center Wood Bat Classic was rained out.
However, Vinita beat Grove 7-2 then blasted Baxter Springs, Kan., 10-0 before play was halted.
“We're playing pretty decent,” Ross said. “We're hitting the ball well and our pitching has been pretty solid. We like our chances.”
