OSWEGO, Kan. - Fairland Junior High rolled to a 50-26 victory over Oswego, Kan., Tuesday night - in an eight-man football game.
"We showed up to play at Oswego and we were not aware that we were supposed to play 8-man football," coach Lee Bluejacket said. "It was a shock to our players. As for myself, it brought back fond memories of my playing days at Welch where we played 8-man football. I enjoyed coaching this game as we only had 15 players anyway.
"At Welch, I was influenced by coaches Mike McClure, Mike Karnes and Frank Hecksher, so I had a pretty good pool of knowledge to draw from."
Devyn McCorkell accounted for six of the Owls' seven touchdowns in the game.
He scored on a 65-yard kickoff return.
He also had TD runs of 40 and 20 yards, then had a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kyler Vannoster, a 15-yard strike to Garrett Davis and a 20-yard pass to Vannoster.
McCorkell also ran three conversions and passed for two more.
Cullen Coffey had Fairland's final score, running five yards.
He also ran the conversion.
