So much for respect.

Vinita brought Baxter Springs, Kan., crashing back to earth Thursday night, rolling to a 10-0 victory in a Pool B game at the Miami True Value Home Center Wood Bat Classic.

That came less than a week after the Lions won the Kansas Class 3A state championship.

Baxter Springs, with a roster virtually intact from the team that won a second straight Kansas title as well as the Mickey Mantle Wooden Bat Classic at Commerce back in April, opened play in the American Legion tournament with a 12-4 victory against Adair.

In other games on the first day, it was Adair 5, Grove 2, and Vinita 7, Grove 2.

Vinita won't play its third pool game until Saturday, when it faces Adair in a 1:30 p.m. contest.

Today's schedule, should this morning's thunderstorm not cause any problems, finds host Miami Post 147 playing its first two games. The Spoonbills face Ozark,, Mo., in the 1 p.m. opener then tackle Springfield, Mo., in the 7:45 p.m. nightcap.
