GROVE – Miami dropped both of its season-opening soccer matches with Grove here Friday night.
The Lady Wardogs suffered a 5-1 loss while the MHS boys were blanked 2-0.
Grove broke out to a 5-0 lead before the Lady Wardogs' lone goal came with a minute left in the half. Reavis crossed the ball and Victoria Bellis hit a left-footed shot to get the goal.
That turned out to be Miami's only shot on goal all night.
"They really outplayed us in the first 35 minutes and put us in a big hole," Miami coach Kurt Witten said. "We settled down after that and played them even keel the rest of the way. Their defense wasn't great, but we didn't do a good job pushing the ball up consistently."
Grove led the boys' game 1-0 at the half and didn't get the final marker until the final two minutes.
"We had as many opportunities as they had," Miami coach Tim Potter said. "We just didn't put the ball in the back of the net."
Potter said both of Grove's goals came on mistakes.
"Now we know what we need to work on," Potter said. "We just need to move the ball better. The boys played hard É we just didn't play our style."
Miami travels to Stilwell Tuesday night for a non-district clash.
