HASKELL - Haskell proved that the road to the Class 2A state softball tournament really is a marathon and not a sprint.

The Lady Haymakers battled all the way back after a first round loss to Fairland by winning four straight games, including a 3-1 decision over the Lady Owls in the deciding game their regional tournament Friday.

Fairland had bumped off Haskell 3-1 in the first round Thursday.

However, the hosts stayed alive with a 5-4 win over Commerce Thursday night, then ran off an 8-1 decision against Oklahoma Union Friday morning.

The Lady Haymakers topped FHS 2-1 to force the “if” game.

Commerce was eliminated with back-to-back losses. The Lady Tigers fell to Oklahoma Union 7-3 then were ousted by Haskell, 5-4.

Haskell 3, Fairland 1

All three of Haskell's runs came in the top of the seventh.

The Lady Owls had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kelsey Campbell led off with a single. Kayla Kowal also had a base hit, then both moved up on a grounder by Bekky Gebhart.

Campbell scored on a passed ball.

The Lady Haymakers took advantage of four Fairland errors in the seventh inning rally, when they also had four hits.

Campbell and Kowal has two singles each for Fairland. Kortney Kowal and Courtney Summers each chipped in with a single.

Haskell 2, Fairland 1

Once again, the Lady Haymakers did the damage in the top of the seventh inning.

Kelsey Hembree singled home the first run then an error allowed what turned out to be the deciding run to score with two out.

Fairland threatened in the bottom of the seventh.

Summers led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Brooke Kerns. Katie Schubert reached on an error, allowing Summers to score.

Schubert reached third when Courtney May hit a comebacker to the circle, but the game ended when Kortney Kowal hit a roller back to pitcher Jallie Neal.

The Lady Owls held a 5-3 edge in hits, but had six errors.

May had two singles for FHS while Schubert, Gebhart and Summers added one each.

Campbell had 11 strikeouts in the game.

Fairland 3, Haskell 1

The Lady Owls worked around four errors thanks to Campbell's 11-strikeout, four-hit pitching. She walked none.

Fairland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.

Kortney Kowal led off with a walk and was bunted to second by Campbell. Kayla Kowal followed with another walk. A single by Gebhart loaded the bases.

Blalock and Summers drilled RBI singles.

Haskell cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third when Chantis Draper led off with a single. She scored on an error.

The Lady Owls countered with a run in the top of the fourth when May walked, stole second and third and scored on an error.

Campbell, who had singled after May scored, went to second on a grounder by Kayla Kowal and third on an error. She was thrown out trying to score on the play.

Fairland 5,

Oklahoma Union 2

The Lady Owls took advantage of nine errors by Oklahoma Union.

Fairland picked up its first run in the second when Brooke Kerns doubled, Katie Schubert singled and May bunted home the run.

Two more runs scored in the fourth for the Lady Owls. May singled with two outs, then scored on a triple by Kortney Kowal. Kowal scored when Campbell reached on an error.

FHS generated another two runs in the fifth. Blalock was safe on an error but was forced at second by Summers. Kerns singled and Summers scored when Schubert reached on an error.

May drove in the final run with a base hit.

The Lady Owls finished with seven hits. Kerns had a double and single while May contributed a pair of singles.

Campbell fanned another 11 while yielding five hits. She walked one.
