BARNSDALL — A last second shot by Barnsdall doomed the Welch boys to a 54-51 loss in their Class A Area I District 7 game here Saturday night.

Barnsdall also won the girls’ district, coasting to a 52-29 victory against the Lady Wildcats.

Both Welch teams move on to sub-regional play in Frontier on Thursday.

The Lady Cats face Davenport at 1:30 p.m. while the WHS boys battle Glencoe at 3 p.m. in a pair of elimination games.

The Welch boys led by as many as eight points in the third quarter only to have Barnsdall stage a rally.

A 15-14 edge in the third quarter left the Wildcats with a 42-40 lead heading into the final stanza.

That’s when Barnsdall used a 14-9 advantage to turn the tables.

“We had a few breakdowns on defense that hurt us,” Welch coach Josh Schertz said. “They cut the backdoor three or four times.”

Jacob Mount headed up the Welch scoring with 20 points. Joey Powers chipped in with 17.

Zach Johnson, Jacob Hansen and Corey Anthony each had 13 points to lead the Panthers.

Welch had led 10-9 after one quarter, then each team scored 17 points in the second period.

Allison Chenoweth had tied the girls’ game at 10 in for the Lady Wildcats on a 3-point goal, but a trey by Jessie Crabtree just before the buzzer gave the hosts a 13-10 edge.

A 13-2 edge in the second quarter allowed Barnsdall to take control of the game, 25-14.

Chelsi Virden, a 5-11 senior forward, finished with 18 points for the Lady Panthers. She got the bulk of her points from inside, but did nail a pair of treys.
