Northeastern A&M got the season started right by sweeping a softball double-header from Labette (Kan.) Community College Thursday afternoon on the NEO diamond.
The Lady Norse won the opener 12-3 then came back to claim an 8-0 decision in the nightcap as Welch freshman Kalleigh Chrz and Taylor Rolland combined on a one-hit shutout.
NEO jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on a leadoff homer by center fielder Kiara Bonner, then came back with five runs in the bottom of the third.
The key blow was a two-run homer to right center field by designated player Kayla Odle. Third baseman Paige Johnson and catcher Cara Dearmore added RBI singles.
Bonner added a two-run homer for NEO in the fourth and right fielder Rachel Bailey had a leadoff home run in the fifth as part of a four-run rally.
Eastern scratched out a pair of unearned runs in the fourth off relief pitcher Brittany Plaisted and tacked on a single run in the fifth.
Maria Buckingham had blanked the Lady Mountaineers on one hit through the first three innings. She struck out four, all coming consecutively in the second and third innings.
Bonner went 4 for 4 with three RBIs for the Lady Norse. First baseman Maddelyn Fraley had two doubles and a single while Dearmore and second baseman Alyssa Poole had two singles each.
In the nightcap, NEO scored two runs in each of the first three innings then added single tallies in the fourth and fifth.
Second baseman Kyrie Panter, a sophomore from Miami, had a pair of doubles as part of a 13-hit attack.
Johnson also had two doubles while Bonner collected a double and single.
Weather permitting, the Lady Norse are scheduled to host Neosho County (Kan.) Community College in a 2 p.m. twinbill Saturday.
