VINITA — The final score of the boys’ game in the 31st annual Lake O’ the Cherokees Basketball Classic doesn’t paint the real picture.
The North chalked up an 88-75 victory over the South here Thursday night.
Four players reached double figures, topped by Afton’s Shawn Free with 15 points.
North MVP Chris Page of Vinita netted 12 points while Miami’s Trent Turner and Afton’s Ryan Markes chipped in with 11 each.
Dee Willis of Vinita and Brandon Rollet of Quapaw scored nine apiece.
Brooke Hall of Pryor earned South MVP honors after getting a game-high 19 points. He had three of the South’s nine treys.
Cedrick Grass of Jay and Kenzie Witt of Colcord added 14 and 13, respectively.
Witt got 10 of his points in the fourth quarter, when the South held a 23-22 advantage.
The North trailed just once — when Salina’s Jordan Monjay hit a bucket from inside with just 20 seconds gone.
A bucket by Tyler Spychalski of Grove tied the score, then a pair of free throws by Vinita’s Dee Willis gave the North a lead it would hold the rest of the way.
The North was up 21-8 after the first quarter, 42-21 at the half and 65-46 heading into the final stanza.
A bucket by Witt at the 5:31 mark cut the North lead back to 70-57, but three free throws and a 3-pointer by Free, along with two free throws from Trent Winters of Grove held the South at bay.
