COMMERCE — Thirteen free throws in the fourth quarter proved to be a lucky number for the Commerce girls as they held on for a 52-46 victory over Afton here Monday in a Lucky 7 Conference basketball game.

“We made some free throws,” Commerce coach Jerry Myers said. “We got down early, but the girls did a good job of fighting back.”

Afton was up 15-9 in the first quarter, but the Lady Tigers used a stretch run to go up 25-20 at the half.

Commerce was up by three heading  into the fourth quarter, when it held a 16-13 advantage.

“We play good at times and play bad at times,” Myers said. “We’ve just been unable to put four quarters together.”

Courtney Watson scored 24 points and Mandy Watson added 12 for Commerce.

Afton received 13 from Shelbie Van Pielt and 12 from Jessica Dry.

Commerce hosts Welch in Lucky 7 Conference play while Afton entertains White Oak.
