SPERRY — Miami broke out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back during a 53-26 victory over Bristow in a first-round boys’ game at the Sperry Invitational.

“We jumped on them early,” Miami coach Rusty Mercer said. “Our defense forced 14 turnovers in the first half. We backed off in the second half.”

The Wardogs led 15-2 after the opening frame, then rolled into the half with a 33-9 advantage.

Bristow held a 13-12 edge in the third period, but MHS regained control with an 8-4 spurt in the final stanza.

“We got some easy baskets in transition,” Mercer said. “This is a team we’ve had trouble with the last couple of years.”

Johnathan Brice had 13 points and James Pickens added 11 for the Wardogs.

Trent Turner contributed eight points, eight assists and two steals while Tony Rodriguez had eight points, two rebounds and five steals.

O’Dell had nine points and Fullbright added seven for the Pirates.

Miami (3-0) faces Collinsville or Sperry Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in a semifinal game. The finals will be at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
