TULSA - Zack Simpson accomplished half of his mission.
Simpson had won both the 110-meter high and 300-meter intermediate hurdles at the Class 4A state track meet last year.
He was going for a repeat in both events, but this time in Class 5A competition at the East Tulsa Sports Complex.
The Miami High School senior won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, posting a time of 38.29 seconds in Saturday's finals.
Alex Elliot of Coweta was second at 39.42.
Simpson had a time of 37.89 seconds in Friday's preliminaries.
His hopes of a second straight win in the 110 highs were dashed when he false started in the prelims Friday.
As a result, Gary Frazier of Shawnee won the event Saturday with a time of 14.79 seconds.
Simpson anchored the MHS 4x100-meter relay team that finished 13th in the prelims with a time of 44.69 seconds.
He was joined by Anthony Pham, Brandon Harkins and Trent Turner.
Meagan Roberts was eighth in the girls' pole vault, clearing 8-6.
Sarah Rhodes was 12th in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:49.55.
The Lady Wardogs' 4x800-meter relay team - Sarah Rhodes, Chelsey Edmondson, Megan Crowell and Amanda Crowell - had a false start.
