WYANDOTTE — A 9-of-12 showing at the free throw line in the fourth quarter helped the Wyandotte girls hold off Grove 53-47 in a non-conference basketball game here Tuesday night.

“We played well — it was one of our better games this season,” Wyandotte coach Kara Kinney said. “Grove had been playing well. They won the NEO tournament.”

Wyandotte’s boys also came away with a 60-50 victory in their game.

The Wyandotte girls, who had lost to Grove 44-43 in January, jumped out to a 19-15 lead in the first quarter.

The Lady Bears were up 27-24 at the half and just 40-39 heading into the fourth quarter.

That’s when they used a 13-8 edge to nail down the victory. Nine of the points came at the free throw line.

The Lady Bears were 13-of-17 at the line in the game.

They also helped themselves by nailing seven 3-point goals. Abbi Munson and Kristen Enyart nailed three each while Jesse Stone had one.

Munson finished with a game-high 17 points while Enyart and Kayla Oleman contributed 15 and 13, respectively.

Rachel Allington scored 17 for the Lady Ridgerunners, with Margaret Pogue added 10.

In the boys’ game, Wyandotte used a 15-7 edge in the third quarter to get some breathing room.

The Bears had led only 11-10 after one and 22-21 at intermission.

Wyandotte also outscored the Ridgerunners 23-21 in the fourth quarter, hitting 17-of-19 free throws along the way.

The Bears were 20-of-27 at the line on the night. By comparison, Grove hit eight of its 11 chances.

“We’d had slow starts in our last two games,” Wyandotte coach Paul Duncan said. “We trailed Welch by 10 at the half and Afton by 20 at the half. They started in a zone and we had problems for our first three or four possessions.”

However, three treys in the quarter helped force the Ridgerunners back into a man defense, Duncan said.

“They are pretty physical,” Duncan said.

Shane Friend scored 20 points and Dakota Sparks and Zach Butterfield had 13 each for the Bears.

Trent Winters, Buck Maples and Trent Phillips scored seven points each for Grove.

Wyandotte marks homecoming and Senior Night Friday when it hosts Bluejacket. Coronation ceremonies will be at 6 p.m. with seniors being recognized between games.
