WELCH - One night after losing a heartbreaker, the Welch boys were on the winning side of a gut-wrenching finish.

Gabe Moore's backdoor layup with 0.9 seconds left gave the Wildcats a 29-27 victory over Commerce in a Lucky 7 Conference basketball game here Friday night.

Commerce had tied the score at 27 on a pair of free throws by Kelly with 35.9 seconds left.

“Just call us the ‘Cardiac Kids' - they're killing me,” Welch coach Josh Schertz said. “We found a way. We were able to clear out and get it finished. It ended up working.”

The Wildcats burned two time outs while milking the clock down for the final shot. Moore took a pass from Chance Sandusky, dribbled left and drove to the basket for the game-winner.

Quapaw got a bucket with 3 seconds remaining to claim a 52-51 win over the Wildcats in a make-up game Thursday night.

“We did a better job rebounding,” Schertz said. “We're young and are just making young team mistakes.”

Neither team set the world on fire from the field. They combined for only 12 points in the first quarter and 25 in the first half.

The Tigers used a 12-0 run spanning the second and third quarters to open up a 17-12 advantage.

A follow shot by Joey Powers at 5:33 of the third quarter snapped a drought that saw the Wildcats go 6:33 without a point.

The bucket by Powers started Welch on a rally that saw them grab a 22-19 lead heading into the final stanza.

WHS led 27-23 with 2:14 remaining thanks to a free throw by Bullard.

But Dusty Williams clicked on a baseline drive at 1:40, then Kelly got his free throws to set up the wild finish.

Powers was the only player to score in double figures for either team. He finished with 13 points.

Sandusky and Jacob Fansler added seven and six, respectively.

Williams has eight points while Zack Barnes added seven for the Tigers.
