COFFEYVILLE, Kan. - Three goals by sophomore midfielder Erica Balbino and one by Tarita Gordon carried Coffeyville Community College to a 4-0 shutout over the Northeastern A&M Lady Norse Tuesday in the season opening soccer match at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“I was satisfied with our overall play,” Lady Norse head coach Lisa Bell said. “After all, we've only been together for less than two weeks while Coffeyville has been practicing since Aug. 1.

“Give us a couple of weeks and we'll be putting points on the board,” Bell said. “We made very good passes and we out shot them, we just couldn't get it in the net.”

Balbino, of Sau Paulo, Brazil, scored her first goal just 4:24 into the match on an assist from Danielle Sandman.

Gordon, a sophomore from Wichita, scored at the 29:21 juncture on an assist from Alisha Cooper to give the Lady Ravens a 2-0 halftime lead.

During the second half the Lady Ravens received two goals by Balbino at 65 minutes and 75:16 to lock up the match. Both goals were assisted by Amy Phipps.

“Early in the match we were subbing in and out and they caught us off guard a little,” Bell said. “But offensively, we took 10 shots on goal in the first half and nine in the second.”

Coffeyville goalkeepers Michelle McElroy and Bry Allen split time in the goal.

The Lady Norse open the home portion of the schedule Friday with a 2 p.m. match against Metropolitan Community College-Blue River Trailblazers of Kansas City, Mo.

NEO remains at home Saturday for a 3 p.m. match with Independence, Kan.
