NEOSHO, Mo. — Three runs in the top of the eighth inning of the second game allowed the sixth ranked Northeastern A&M Lady Norse to complete a double-header sweep Tuesday of the Crowder College Lady Riders.
After earning a 7-3 victory in the first game, coach Eric Iverson’s Lady Norse rallied for a 4-1 win in the nightcap against the Lady Riders. The Lady Norse are 4-0 on the young season while the Lady Riders are 2-2 overall.
Following a trip Friday to Tishomingo for a 2 p.m. Bi-State Athletic Conference double-header with Murray State College, the Lady Norse will host a two-day classic starting Saturday on the NEO diamond.
“We were originally scheduled to go to Wilburton over the weekend for a classic at Eastern State,” Iverson said. “But, when it fell through, I decided to create our own classic here.”
The Lady Norse will face Garden City, Kan., at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday followed by a double-header at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. between Rose State College and Barton County, Kan.
Classic action on Sunday starts with a twinbill at 10 a.m. and noon between Rose State and Garden City followed at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. between the Lady Norse and Barton County.
Freshman Kalleigh Chrz scattered three runs on seven hits to earn her second victory in the 7-3 win over Crowder College in the opener. Chrz struck out four and walked five in pitching a complete game.
A single by Rachel Bailey started the top of the third inning for NEO. Alyssa Poole reached on a fielder’s choice with Bailey being forced at second base. Kiara Bonner drilled a 2-0 pitch over the left-field fence for her third home run of the season for a 2-0 NEO lead.
Sending eight batters to the plate in the fourth inning, the Lady Norse built a 6-0 cushion.
Following a walk by Lauren Iverson, consecutive singles by Paige Johnson, Cara Dearmore, Kayla Odle and Bailey scored three runs for the Lady Norse. A two-out single by Bonner plated Odle with the fourth run.
Maddelyn Fraley singled to start the top of the fifth inning for the Lady Norse. After a sacrifice by Iverson, Fraley scored on a single by Johnson to create a 7-0 Lady Norse margin.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Olivia Baldwin walked for the Lady Riders. Cassie Kissler singled to center before Amber Zumwalt doubled to right-center, scoring both Baldwin and Kissler.
Crowder added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning after a one-out double by Alana Burhhart. A passed ball sent Burhhart to third, then Chrz unleashed a wild pitch scoring Burhhart for a 7-3 deficit.
Bonner, Fraley, Johnson and Bailey each collected two hits to pace the 11-hit Lady Norse attack.
Crowder’s only run in the second game against Lady Norse starter Taylor Rolland came in the bottom of the first inning.
Burhhart walked to start the inning. After taking second on a fielder’s choice by Layne Walters, Burhhart stole third and came around to score on an errant throw by NEO catcher Cara Dearmore.
NEO tied the score with one out in the top of the second inning. Johnson singled to center. Dearmore lined an RBI double to left-center scoring Johnson for a 1-1 tie.
Kyrie Panter singled to start the top of the eighth inning for NEO. Fraley followed with a double to left-center, scoring Panter. Johnson singled, scoring Fraley, and Dearmore singled, scoring Johnson to create a 4-1 Lady Norse lead.
Rolland allowed one run on four hits in eight innings to earn her first victory. She struck out one and walked three.
Dearmore and Johnson each had three of the 10 Lady Norse hits.
