LENAPAH - A three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh helped Oklahoma Union beat Afton 8-7 in the softball opener for both teams.
“We should have won it,” Afton coach Shane Simpson said. “We had the game under control but had a couple errors in the last inning. It was frustrating.”
The Lady Eagles had opened up a 6-1 lead by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
However, Oklahoma Union got two runs in the bottom of the fifth to narrow the gap to 6-3.
Afton pushed across its final run in the top of the sixth. The Lady Cougars made things interesting by scoring twice in the bottom half of the inning, then pulled out the win in its half of the seventh with only one out.
Allison Bean headed up the Afton offensive attack with two doubles and two singles. Jacy Grimes, Jennifer Grimes and Ashley Carroll each had two hits while Shelbie Van Pielt chipped in with a single.
Losing pitcher Jakey Dobbs had three sacrifices at the plate.
Afton begins play in the Quapaw Tournament today, facing Vinita at 5 p.m. The Lady Eagles continue White Division play with a pair of 3:30 p.m. games - facing Welch Thursday and Fairland on Friday.
