EL DORADO, Kan. - Hoping to get a “good read” on the progression of his young team, Northeastern A&M's Lady Norse open the volleyball season today in the Butler Community College Invitational Tournament.

Coach Eric Iverson's open pool play in the two-day tournament by facing the Lady Cardinals of Labette Community College at 3 p.m. Last season the Lady Cardinals finished 13-27 overall.

NEO squares off against arch rival Coffeyville Community College at 4:30 p.m. in the second pool match. Last season the Lady Ravens compiled a 33-13 overall record.

“These first two matches should be an excellent indicator for us as to where we are as a team,” Iverson said. “Both of these teams return a lot of players, so they will be more experienced than we are.”

The Lady Norse conclude pool play at 11 a.m. Saturday with a match against Allen County Community College of Iola, Kan. The Lady Red Devils finished 14-29 last season.

Three teams that are ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II preseason national poll are competing in the other tournament pools.

Cowley County Community College of Arkansas City, Kan., is ranked second in the nation after compiling a 31-6 record last season.

The host Lady Grizzlies of Butler Community College are ranked 19th in the poll. The Lady Grizzlies finished 25-19 last season.

Neosho County Community College of Chanute, Kan., is ranked 28th after the Lady Panthers posted a 20-16 mark last year.
