COMMERCE – Brian Waybright wants to bring a little bit of the Mickey Mantle Classic to the Lady Tiger Classic, a fast-pitch softball tournament that gets rolling Thursday.
“We're going to do some things to make it unique,” said Waybright. “It doesn't have the Mantle name, but we will have an all-tournament team and get gifts for the coaches.”
Waybright has turned the Mantle, feeding on the name of “The Commerce Comet,” into one of the state's premier baseball tournaments.
The softball tournament features 10 teams divided into three pools.
Afton, Diamond, Mo., and Verdigris are in the Red Pool; Commerce, East Newton, Mo., and Fairland are in the Blue Pool, and Colcord, Miami, Quapaw and Seneca, Mo., have been assigned to the Navy Pool.
Commerce is ranked seventh in Oklahoma Class 2A and Quapaw is 11th in 2A. Verdigris is sixth in 3A.
Seven games will be played Thursday starting at 10 a.m. and a final three pool games will be Friday. A consolation game will be played Friday at 2:30 p.m.
Additional consolation games will be at 9 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday with semifinal games at 12:15 and 2 p.m.
The third-place game will be at 3:45 p.m. The championship will be decided at 5:30 p.m.
