Scoring 21 runs in 12 innings, Northeastern A&M's seventh-ranked Golden Norsemen swept a double-header 7-1 and 14-2 Saturday afternoon over Central Lakes Community College of Brainerd, Minn., at Homa Thomas Field.
With the sweep, coach Roger Ward's Golden Norsemen are 14-4 on the season while the Central Lakes Raiders are 2-8 overall.
The Norsemen travel to Lee's Summit, Mo., Tuesday for a 1 p.m. double-header with the Metropolitan Community College-Longview Lakers.
Against Central Lakes in the bottom of the first inning of the first game, NEO grabbed the lead on a one-out walk by Pete Hoyt. After stealing second, Hoyt scored on a two-out double to right by Kevin Meyers.
Back-to-back doubles by Cody Ryan and Calvin Ellis started a two-run second inning for NEO. Josh Schnable singled to left, scoring Ryan. Nick Shiplett reached on a fielder's choice as Ellis scored for a 3-0 Golden Norse cushion.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Schnable singled. After a wild pitch by Trevor Woodruff sent Schnable to third, Shiplett delivered a sacrifice fly to center scoring Schnable for a 4-0 Norse lead.
NEO scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a single by Mark Podlas and back-to-back home runs by Meyers and Riley.
The Raiders scored a run in the top of the seventh inning off NEO reliever Andrew Mirasty. A walk by Jared Hoemberg and singles by Tyler Lenz and Johny Egan scored Hoemberg with the only Central Lakes run of the game.
Meyers, Riley and Schnable produced two hits each to lead the nine-hit Golden Norse attack.
Lenz collected two of the five Central Lakes hits.
Erupting for 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning, the Golden Norse needed only five innings to complete the double-header sweep with a 14-2 win in the nightcap.
A two-run homer by Samuel Groleau and RBI doubles by Ellis, Zane Fish, Meyers and Dom Samyn highlighted the marathon second inning for the Norsemen.
Hoyt doubled to start a four-run bottom of the third inning for NEO. Pinch hitter Kyle Byrd reached on an error and pinch hitter C.J. Wilcox followed with an RBI double, scoring Hoyt. Samyn hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Byrd. Dustin Exrod lined a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run homer, scoring Wilcox for a 14-0 NEO advantage.
Mark Ryan relieves Dany Coulombe who replaced Golden Norse starter Kyle Willard in the top of the fifth inning. Walks to Peter Luken and Jaron Hanson start a two-run rally by the Raiders. After Brian Yackley reached base on an error by wilcox at shortstop to fill the bases, Curt Tumberg singled scoring Luken. Tony Madsen walked to refill the bases. Derek Pihlaja reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Hanson with the final run.
Ellis had two of the 14 Golden Norse hits along with 12 other NEO batters.
Tumberg had the only hit by the Raiders against five NEO pitchers.
