HAWKINSVILLE, Ga. - Cedric Scotto of Mulhouse, France, carded a 9-under 63 in the opening round of the NGA Pro Golf Tour’s ComSouth Classic at Southern Hills Golf Club on Thursday to finish the day with a one-shot lead.
While his 63 was the low round of the day, Scotto, a former Southeastern Louisiana University standout, looked like he may flirt with Dave Schreyer’s course record of 61 early in the round.
The 2010 All-Southland Conference selection eagled two of his first three holes and reached 7-under par in six holes. After turning in 29, Scotto cooled a touch on the backside, adding just two more birdies en route to a Thursday-low 63.
While Scotto is searching for his first NGA TOUR victory, three of the four golfers tied for second have tasted victory on the No. 3 tour in the country. NGA TOUR winners Todd Bailey, Marion Dantzler and Erik Barnes finished the first round with matching 64s.
Bailey and Dantzler were regulars in the Buffalo Run Casino Classic, which is being replaced this year by the NGA Tour Championship, which will be played Sept. 5-7 at Peoria Ridge.
Bailey, a four-time NGA winner and 2011 Nationwide Tour member from Spanish Fort, Ala., had nine birdies and one bogey in the opening round. Dantzler, a former Nationwide Tour member from Orangeburg, S.C., carded six birdies and one eagle on Thursday. Barnes, a former Austin Peay standout from Marion, Ind., had three eagles, two bogeys and four birdies. Zac Radford, a former University of Tennessee standout from Brentwood, Tenn., also carded an 8-under 64 on Thursday.
