FAIRFAX – Welch held its own against everyone except Rejoice Christian during Friday night's four-way scrimmage here.

“Overall, I felt we played with everybody except Rejoice Christian,” Wildcat head coach Ryan Gleaves said. “They are pretty good. We have to keep an eye on them for Week 2. That will be a tough match for us.”

Joining Welch and Rejoice, a private school located in Owasso that is in its first year of membership in the OSSAA, in the scrimmage were Woodland and Pond Creek-Hunter.

“We played with Woodland and we played with Pond Creek-Hunter,” Gleaves said. “We will have to prepare for them (Rejoice).”

The Wildcats also will see Woodland – which won the Class A state title last year – in Week 9.

Rejoice runs the Wing-T, pulling the guard and using lots of traps.

“Half of the plays, we didn't get set up in the right spot,” Gleaves said. “We have a week to prepare. They used outmatched us and we kinda got down on ourselves, then we didn't perform very well after that.”

The Wildcats open the season Friday night on the road against arch rival Bluejacket.
