AFTON — Welch broke open what had been a close game by scoring six runs in the sixth inning, rolling to a 12-2 victory over Afton in the championship game of their Class A District 19 fast-pitch softball tournament here Friday.
The 10th-ranked Lady Wildcats (20-5) swept all three of their games in the tournament, beating Oaks 11-1 and Afton 5-1 during play on Wednesday.
The game was nip and tuck for the first three innings. Welch jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. It was 3-1 after the second and 4-2 through three frames.
The Lady Wildcats scored twice in the fourth inning then took charge in the sixth.
Winning pitcher Lexie Mercer struck out 10 and walked two in six innings of work.
Katie Armstrong went 4-for-4 at the plate for Welch, collecting a triple and double. Rachel Seigel and Rylie Chenoweth had three singles each.
Tylor Dodson and Rupert had a double and single each while Mercer added two singles.
Brianna Warner and Julia Armstrong each had a single.
