Miami was swept by Columbus, Kan., and Carthage, Mo., in its season-opening wrestling matches here Tuesday night.
The Wardogs dropped a 51-30 decision to Carthage, then suffered a 60-18 loss to Columbus.
Columbus rallied for a 45-33 victory over Carthage in the night’s third match.
“At least we got the first one out of the way,” Miami coach Josh Bolinger said. “We had a couple guys who wrestled pretty well.”
The Wardogs now are idle until Dec. 11, when they host McDonald County High of Anderson, Mo., in a dual.
Miami fell behind Carthage 24-0 and 39-6 before running off four straight wins.
Blaine Fields pinned Cory Heinz of Carthage at the 55-second mark of the first period of their 135-pound match.
The Dogs didn’t score again until Grant Bigby won by forfeit at 160 and Jay Mann picked up a forfeit at 171 to narrow the gap to 39-18.
Miami continued to make things interesting when Tyler Johnson pinned Garrett Buzzard at 2:50 in the second period of their 189-pound match, then 215-pounder Brandon Alley stuck Nelson Horton at 2:17, also in the second period.
That cut the deficit back to 39-30.
However, the Tigers’ Erick Vargas got a pin at the 38-second mark in the first period against Jose Fonseca, then Kyle Shaner won by forfeit at 103.
There were eight pins and four forfeits in the match.
The only match that went the distance was at 145, where the Dogs’ Joe Lamb suffered a 6-2 loss to Harold Cooper.
Against Columbus, the Wardogs’ only on-the-mat points came when Mann pinned Paul Morris at 3:59 of the second period.
Randy Collins picked up a forfeit at 119 pounds and Colby Anderson was a forfeit winner at 130.
Columbus’ C.J. Napier, who recently signed to wrestle with Nebraska, won both of his 152-pound matches by fall.
He pinned Miami’s Eli Marquez at 1:40 of the first period and pinned Estevan Maturino of Carthage at 3:37 of the second.
