YUMA, Ariz. — Unleashing 53 points in the second half, Northeastern A&M’s Golden Norsemen rolled to an 89-54 victory over Yapavai College (Ariz.) Monday afternoon in the opening round of the fifth annual Wells Fargo Bank Holiday Classic.

Coach Dustin Grover’s Golden Norse carry a 9-4 season record into Tuesday’s 7:30 p.m. showdown with the 18th-ranked Arizona Western Matadors.

Coach Kelly Green, son of former NEO head coach Cletus Green, has guided the Matadors to a 11-1 record prior to Monday night’s late game with Frank Phillips, Texas (11-2).

Grover served as Green’s assistant coach at Arizona Western from 2000 through the 2005 season.

“It took us one whole half to shake off the cobwebs,” Grover said. “Once we did, we played well at both ends of the floor.

“We’ll have our hands full with Arizona Western,” Grover said. “They are not only very athletic, but they can score from anywhere on the court and they have some depth.”

NEO took advantage of a deep bench. Twelve members of the Golden Norse contributed points compared to only six players for the Roughriders, who fell to 2-11.

Sophomore guard Scott Forrest hit three 3-point field goals and Phil Martin added nine points for the Norsemen, who constructed a 36-20 lead at halftime for the Golden Norsemen.

NEO also got six points each from newcomer Tony Ross and freshmen Will Fonseca and Rodrigo Freitas.

Ross, a 6-7 sophomore from  Tulsa Union, missed the first half of the season with an injury.

Six points each by Brandon Edwards and Korey Fisher early in the second half enabled the Norsemen to open up a 48-26 cushion at the 15-minute mark.

Forrest was one of four Golden Norse to score in double figures with 14 points. Martin had 13 and NEO got 10 points each from Ross and Fonseca.

Freshman guard Donte Goodlett paced the Roughriders with 13 points while sophomore forward Daniel Duran contributed 10.

Goodlett pulled down 11 rebounds to give Yapavai a 40-30 advantage on the boards. Edwards grabbed seven rebounds to lead NEO.
