JAY - Miami went 2-2, but was one win shy of reaching the finals of an American Legion baseball tournament here.
Post 147 suffered a 6-3 loss to Vinita Saturday in what would be their final game in the tournament.
The game was halted after 5 1/2 innings by rain, then the final round on Sunday was cancelled by a wet field.
“If we had won, we would have been in the finals,” Miami coach Nick Maxson said.
The tourney had been pushed back two days due to the weather.
Post 147 topped Locust Grove 2-0 on Tuesday, dropped a 9-1 decision to the hosts then blasted Grove 11-4.
Post 147 begins district play Friday at Joe Pollock Field. Claremore and Skiatook meet in the 3 p.m. opener, with Miami facing the winner at 6 p.m.
Two more games are set for Saturday, including the 3 p.m. title game. An “if necessary” game will be Sunday at 3 p.m.
Vinita 6, Miami 3
Miami jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single by Johnathan Brice, but couldn't maintain.
Vinita grabbed a 3-2 lead in the second then picked up two more runs in the third. It's final run came in the fifth.
Post 147 got its final run in the fifth.
Nick Henson and Ethan Wilson each had a double while Brice, Walker and Spencer Neal added singles.
Miami 11, Grove 4
Grant Longcrier pitched around four hits and three errors to get the win for Post 147.
Miami got 10 of its runs in the first two innings, breaking out to a 6-1 lead in the first. It stretched that to 10-1 in the second.
The Spoonbills got single runs in the third and fifth frames.
Grove picked up a single tally in the third and scored two more in the fourth.
Andrew Allen headed up the Miami offensive attack with a double and two singles. Brett Abell added a double and single.
Pickens, Brice and Wilson added singles.
Jay 9, Miami 1
Jay broke out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.
Post 147, which was held hitless, got its only run in the second.
James Pickens was hit by a pitch and Jordan Simons walked before Neal reached on an error.
Jay scored once in the third then got a final four runs in the fourth.
Post 147 stranded five runners in the game.
It had five walks, one hit batters and two runners reached on errors.
