CHANUTE, Kan. — Christmas wasn’t the only thing The Grinch stole as the 30th-ranked Northeastern A&M Lady Norse suffered a 60-59 upset Thursday night at the hands of Neosho County Community College in the Panther Fieldhouse.

While snapping a seven-game winning streak, coach Jim Rowland’s Lady Norse enter the month-long holiday break with a 13-3 season record. The Lady Norse return to the court on Jan. 10 at Seminole State College.

First-year head coach Tonika Bruce’s Neosho Panthers won their fourth straight game and enter the Christmas break with a 5-7 overall record.

“We couldn’t get anything to fall all night,” Rowland said. “We had our chances, but the ball just didn’t go in.

“This was another one of those games where we beat ourselves,” Rowland said. “You can’t shoot 36 percent from the field and expect to beat anybody.”

Lady Norse sophomore guard Megan Fraley put NEO in a position to win the game by driving the length of the floor with eight seconds left in the game.

Fraley pulled up at the free throw line for a jump shot as the buzzer sounded. The ball bounced off the rim giving the Panthers a one-point victory.

Playing without 3-point specialist Kali Bassett, the Lady Norse hit only 5 of 23 from the 3-point arc for 22 percent the entire game.

Bassett, a 5-8 sophomore from Grove, has been sidelined the past two games with a foot injury.

Neosho County grabbed a 21-18 lead through the first 10 minutes of the game on seven points from sophomore Fila Smith and six points each from Danielle Harris and Adel Morris and a layup by Kaitlyn Biehl.

Five points each by Fraley and Jelina Cerina, along with four points each by Nolisha Markham and Ashley Mekeel, rallied the Lady Norse to a 36-34 lead with 34 seconds until halftime.

Harris canned a 3-pointer as the Panthers carried a 37-36 lead to the locker room at intermission.

During the second half, the lead changed hands nine times before two free throws by Morris gave the Panthers a 60-59 lead and set up Fraley’s futile attempt to win the game.

Cerina led the Lady Norse with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Fraley scored 13 and Markham added 11.

Smith led all scorers with 18 points for the Panthers while Harris added 11.
