A number of local softball players have been playing with the Arkansas Phenix, an 18 & under fast-pitch softball team based out of Gentry, Ark.
“Even though the girls are young enough to play in 16 & Under division tournaments, they play at the higher level of 18 & Under for more exposure in hopes of collegiate scout recognition,” coach Christi Young said. “The team publicizes each athlete in a flyer for each game that is available for college recruiters.”
Local players on the team include Kelsey Neal, Courtnei Young and Megan Barnes of Miami, Courtney Summers and Ashlee Davis of Fairland and Kayla Oleman of Wyandotte.
Others members include Brittany Wagnon, Nevada Campos, Katie Parsons, Brittany Nunley and Callie Parsons of Pryor, and Amber Rollins of Arkansas.
Brent Mills is the manager of the Phenix.
Earlier this month, the team finished sixth among 58 teams in the 18 & under open division at the Colorado Sparkler Tournament in Denver, Colo. There were a total of 320 teams entered.
“Every athlete demonstrated outstanding work ethic and desire to achieve excellence at this tournament,” Christi Young said. “I am extremely proud of them all. The girls and parents represented northeast Oklahoma with the upmost support and sportsmanship.”
Local sponsors of the team are Bomford, Couch & Wilson, Welch State Bank, Chuck Neal, Chris Roper, Manhattan Construction Company and Security Bank and Trust.
