RED ROCK — A 43-27 edge in the first half helped the Welch boys glide to a 61-40 victory over Glencoe Thursday in a Class A Area I sub-regional at Frontier High School.

The Welch girls also advanced with a 43-36 decision.

Play moves to Morrison today, with the Lady Wildcats meeting the Ripley-Copan loser at 6:30 p.m. while the Wildcats face either Ripley or Morrison at 8 p.m.

“We came out fired up,” Welch coach Josh Schertz said. “We played really good defense.”

The Wildcats jumped out to a 21-10 lead in the first quarter then came back with another 22 points in the second period.

Each team scored five points in the third frame and Welch held a 13-8 edge over the final eight minutes.

Joey Powers had 21 points and nine rebounds and Jacob Mount had a double-double, getting 19 points and 10 rebounds. He was 9 of 11 at the free throw line.

Billy McClintock came off the bench to get eight points after Powers got into foul trouble.

Chance Sandusky and Austin Buchanan scored five points each while Asa Chenoweth added two points. Gabe Moore chipped in with a free throw.
