TONKAWA - Freshman guard Raphael Brown hit a short jump shot with seven seconds on the clock to give the Northeastern A&M Golden Norsemen a thrilling 62-61 victory Monday night over Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa.

Fans in the Foster-Piper Fieldhouse were on their feet as Maverick freshman guard Sterling Jackson drove the length of the floor and fired up a 7-foot jump shot with one tick left on the game clock.

Jackson's shot hit off the back of the rim and was rebounded by NEO's Chase Elliott as the buzzer sounded.

The drama of the game began to unfold after several lead changes during the second half.

Jackson drove the lane for a layup to give the Mavericks a precarious 59-58 lead with 50 seconds left in the game.

After a time out by NEO coach Dustin Grover, Golden Norse freshman guard Phillipe Martin took the inbounds pass and connected on a 12-foot jumper to give the Norsemen a 60-59 lead with 33 seconds showing on the clock.

Northern point guard Demetrece Young sat up the Mavericks offense before dribble penetrating for a layup with just 17 seconds left to create a 61-60 lead.

Indicative of the second half, the lead changed hands eight times in the first half with neither team holding more than a four-point spread.

Five points each by Elliott, Martin, Brown and Andre Coimbra along with four points each by Jamell Cormier and Jamere King gave the Golden Norsemen a 28-26 lead at halftime.

Elliott led the Norse with 13 points while Martin scored 12 and Brown added 11.

The Golden Norsemen hit 24 of 60 (40 percent) from the field, including 3 of 15 from the 3-point arc, and 11 of 14 (79 percent) at the free throw line.

Jackson tallied 19 points to lead all scorers while Geoff McIntosh added 12 for the Mavericks.

Northern-Tonkawa sank 22 of 52 (42 percent) from the field, including 7 of 19 from 3-point range. The Mavs hit 10 of 13 (77 percent) at the free throw line.

Elliott grabbed seven rebounds to give NEO a 32-25 advantage on the boards. Jackson and Carl Curry each had five rebounds to lead the Mavericks.

While winning their sixth straight, the Golden Norsemen are 9-3 on the season and 4-1 against the Bi-State West. The loss dropped the Mavs to 6-6 on the year and 2-2 against the Bi-State East.

Returning home Wednesday, the Norsemen will entertain the Jets of Northern Oklahoma College-Enid at 8 p.m. in the NEO Fieldhouse.

The Jets are 9-3 on the season and 3-0 against the Bi-State East.
