WATTS — Four free throws down the stretch helped the Welch girls squeeze by Watts 52-49 Tuesday night in a non-conference basketball game.

Welch completed a sweep by rolling 66-43 in the boys’ game.

Sierra Hankins and Allison Chenoweth each hit two free throws to give the Lady Wildcats a 52-48 edge, then Watts got a free throw with seven seconds left to create the final margin.

“We struggled shooting in the first half,” Welch coach Shawn Goodwin said. “We played better in the second half. Our posts were in foul trouble most of the night.”

Chenoweth had 15 points and Hankins added 14 for the Lady Wildcats (2-1). There were joined in double figures by Jordan Amos, who fouled out with four minutes remaining.

The Lady Engineers jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the first quarter, but Welch cut the gap to 25-22 by intermission.,

The Lady Wildcats grabbed a 38-37 lead at the end of the third frame. They created the final margin with a 14-12 edge in the fourth period.

Higgins and Potter scored 14 points each for Watts.

In the boys’ game, Welch (2-1) jumped out to an 18-13 lead in the first quarter and continued to pull away.

The Cats were up 38-20 at the half then erupted for 29 points in the third period to open up a 66-32 advantage.

“They tried to press and we got a lot of easy buckets,” Welch coach Josh Schertz said.

Using a lineup completely stocked with reserves, Welch was outscored 11-0 in the fourth quarter.

“The fourth quarter was real ugly,” Schertz said. “The bench has got to come in and play better. They will have to step it up.”

Joey Powers had 34 points to head up the Welch scoring. He’s averaging 25.7 points per game after having 30 in the opener with South Coffeyville and 13 against Afton.

Gabe Moore added 12 points for the Cats.
