The gymnasium floor at the Miami Civic Center has suffered damage from water that entered the building during a recent downpour.

City officials have been in contact with specialists who deal with water damage of this nature.

“They’ve told us to find a couple industrial dehumidifiers,” said Jill Fitzgibbon, public services coordinator for the City of Miami. “Then we will put weights on it as it comes down.”

Fitzgibbon said about a quarter of the floor on the north end sustained damage.

“We’re babying it along,” she said. “We’re hoping for the best.”

The floor has had to have repairs in various spots over the years, but this might be the most extensive damage in some time.

Fitzgibbon said a men’s basketball league that had been using the building has been cancelled.

She said no other events were scheduled there until this fall.

Miami High School ended a 50-plus year stay at the Civic Center earlier this year. MHS will play at its on-campus Miami Activity Center starting with the 2009-10 season.
