SALINA - Fairland picked up a pair of wins Wednesday during the first round of the Salina Tournament.
The Lady Owls beat Watts 9-4, then held on for a 5-3 victory against Salina.
Fairland plays in the 11:15 a.m. winners' bracket final Thursday. A win there would move it into the 1:45 p.m. championship game.
If they lose, the Lady Owls play at 12:30 p.m. in the losers' bracket final.
The "if necessary" game would be at about 3 p.m.
Leanna Prater keyed the win over Watts, both at bat and in the circle.
She went 3-for-4 with three singles and yielded just two hits and one earned run.
Prater struck out one and walked two over seven innings.
There were five lead changes in the game, with Fairland creating what would be the final score with a run in the top of the fifth inning.
In addition to Prater's three hits, Ashlee Davis and Mykayla Ziebert had a double and single each.
Mahala Wiseley had a two-run double in the fourth.
Paige Gibson and Katie Martin each had a single.
One of the Lady Wildcats' hits was a home run.
In the win over Watts, the Lady Owls broke out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
The Lady Engineers used a two-run rally in the fourth to get back to within two, 5-3.
Fairland took charge by scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth, then added two more in the seventh.
Prater had another three hits while driving in three runs.
Paige Gibson had a double and single and Lindsay Goodman and Mahala Wiseley had two singles apiece.
Davis, Lauren McCabe and Martin chipped in with a single each.
Prater struck out four and walked none. Watts finished with nine hits.
