LOCUST GROVE – Doing all the damage in one inning, Wyandotte squeezed out a 3-0 victory over Hulbert in the championship game of the Locust Grove slow-pitch softball tournament here Friday.
A 9-4 win over Fairland earlier Friday sent Wyandotte into the finals.
“It was a pretty good game … a fast-paced game,” Wyandotte coach John Leppla said. “We played awesome defense, the best I've seen us play in the four years I have been here.”
Wyandotte got all three runs in the third inning, with Mykah Meador, Ashlee Waybright and Kourtney Leppla each driving in a run.
Waybright had a double and single while Meador, Kourtney Leppla, winning pitcher Rachel Anderson, Laura Brown and Chandler Young each had a single.
The Lady Bears turned in three double plays to thwart Hulbert threats.
“It seemed that everyone had a play in the game that meant something,” John Leppla said.
The title was the second straight here for the Lady Bears, who had beaten Oaks 11-6 in the finals a year ago.
Wyandotte 9, Fairland 4
Five unanswered runs helped Wyandotte break a 3-3 tie and coast to the win in the semifinal round.
Each team scored three times in the first inning, then the Lady Bears pushed across three runs in the top of the second on singles by Waybright and Kourtney Leppla and an error.
The Lady Bears picked up single tallies in the third, fourth and sixth innings.
Fairland’s final run came in the fourth on a single by Ashlee Davis.
Lauren McCabe had a three-run homer in the first and a single to head up a nine-hit Lady Owl attack.
Davis, Whitney Dushane, Gibson, Wiseley, Lexi Wade, Mykayla Ziebert and Kyla Reynolds all had singles.
Kourtney Leppla and Waybright had three singles each for the Lady Bears. Allison Douthit added a pair of singles.
