COFFEYVILLE, Kan. —Excessive fouls and a porous defense cost the Northeastern A&M Golden Norsemen a 78-68 defeat at the hands of Highland (Kan.) Community College midday Sunday in the final round of the Jayhawk Shoot-Out in the Nellis Hall West gymnasium.

Coach Dustin Grover’s Golden Norse conclude the first half of the season mired in a three-game losing streak with a 9-6 record.

The Norsemen return to the court on Jan. 9 in Broken Arrow with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Rhema Bible College.

Behind 14 points by freshman point-guard Jaurrice Magg-Downing, the Scotties (7-4) built a 38-28 lead at halftime. Eddie Gray, Tyler Nordman and Korie Fisher scored six points each along with four from Brandon Coleman and a layup by Chris Patterson.

Freshmen guards Phillipe Martin and Raphael Brown combined for eight points each for the Golden Norsemen during the first 20 minutes along with four points each by Jamell Cormier, Chaz Davis, Jamere King and Ross Moore.

The two teams battled to a 40-40 draw during the entire second half as the Scotties led throughout the entire game.

Martin led the Norsemen with 19 points while Brown added 15.

Maag-Downing (6-2 of Atchison, Kan.) hit 10 of 15 from the field and 7 of 8 free throws for 28 points for Highlands.

Gray contributed 16, Nordman 11 and Fisher 10 points.

NEO was ticketed for 20 personal fouls, including two technicals, while the Scotties received only eight total fouls.

Fisher grabbed seven rebounds to give the Scotties a slim 32-30 edge on the boards. Martin pulled down nine rebounds to lead NEO.
