COFFEYVILLE, Kan. - Trying to overcome “extreme exhaustion” while at the same time extend a four-game winning streak, Northeastern A&M's Lady Norse travel to Coffeyville, Kan., today for an 8 p.m. rematch with the Coffeyville Lady Ravens in Nellis Hall.
Originally scheduled to start at 6 p.m., the game was moved because coach Jay Herkelman's Red Ravens are playing the Mid-America Nazarene JV.
“They called last week and ask if we could flip-flop starting times because the men are playing a JV,” Lady Norse head coach Jim Rowland. “Since it means a little more time before we have to climb back on the bus, I said it was alright.”
After a two-game sweep last weekend (80-78 win over Kansas City, Kan., and a 63-56 victory over Independence, Kan.) in the Jayhawk Shoot-Out at Coffeyville, the Lady Norse earned an 86-58 win Monday night at Northern-Oklahoma-Tonkawa.
“Our biggest hurdle will be to overcome tired legs,” Rowland said. “We rode back and forth to Coffeyville and then made the three-hour trip to Tonkawa.
“Now, we turn around and go back to Coffeyville,” Rowland said. “Not only are we exhausted, but it's really tough to win in Coffeyville.
“This is where our preseason conditioning with weights and running comes in to play,” Rowland said. “They know what they have to do and besides we didn't have a full-blown practice on Wednesday.”
While winning four straight games, the Lady Norse stand 9-3 on the season. The Lady Norse conclude the fall portion of the schedule Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at Western State College in Altus.
Fifth-year head coach Emily Washburn has guided the Lady Ravens to a 6-5 season record following a 63-45 drubbing of Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College Saturday evening in Coffeyville's Nellis Hall.
With sophomore starters Misty Haley and Autumn Thompson are still sidelined with illnesses which means the Lady Norse will feature five freshmen in the starting lineup.
Tasha Hedgecorth (5-5 of Webb City, Mo.) and Megan Fraley (5-6 of Adair) will start in the Lady Norse backcourt.
Hedgecorth is averaging 5.6 points with 31 assists and 12 steals. Fraley has a 12.1 scoring mark with 33 assists and 18 steals.
Freshmen ShiNeice Cox (5-4 of Columbus, Ohio) and Lacie Ward (5-6 of Harper, Kan.) are expected to start in the backcourt for Coffeyville.
Cox is averaging 2.5 points with 34 assists and 17 steals. Ward leads the team with 21 steals and 36 assists while averaging 2.5 points per game.
Starting on the perimeter for the Lady Norse will be Kali Bassett and Nolisha Markham.
Bassett (5-8 of Grove) is averaging 6.2 points and 1.3 rebounds while Markham (5-10 of Tulsa) leads NEO with a 12.8 scoring average and a 8.1 rebounding mark.
Sophomores Syeeda Echols (5-8 of Wichita, Kan.) and Asaiah Lowe (5-10 of Detroit, Mich.) should start on the wings for Coffeyville.
Echols is averaging 4.2 points and 1.2 rebounds while Lowe is averaging 6.1 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
Probable starter in the post-position for the Lady Norse is freshman Skye Rees (6-2 of Melbourne, Australia).
Rees is averaging 10.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
Matching up against Rees in the paint for Coffeyville will be freshman Allison Royland (6-1 of Richardson, Texas).
Royland leads the Lady Ravens with a 5.9 rebounding mark while scoring 7.9 points per contest.
