Zack Simpson conquered Class 4A, now he sets his sights on 5A.

The Miami High School senior swept the 110-meter high and 300-meter hurdles at last year's 4A state meet.

Simpson got a chance at a repeat, this time in 5A, during regional competition at Union last Saturday.

Simpson owns the top time in 5A in the 300 hurdles this spring, posting a time of 38.15 seconds at Vinita.

Kevin Wright of McAlester is a ways behind, posting a 39.63 at Bixby.

Simpson and Wright ran 1-2 in the regional with times of 40.47 and 40.68 seconds, respectively.

Simpson's 14.34-second run in the regional moved him into the lead in the 5A 110 hurdles.

Shawnee's Gary Frazier had been the frontrunner with a time of 14.38 seconds at Elk City.

Simpson had been second after being timed in 14.47 seconds at Pryor.

Kevin Wright of McAlester was second in the regional finals with a time of 14.37 seconds.

Miami's Megan Roberts had placed fourth in the pole vault by clearing 8-0. That was good enough to pull her into the state meet as a wild card entry.

The Miami boys' 4x100-meter relay and girls' 4x800 relays also benefitted from the rule since their fourth-place times met one of the top three times at one of the other three regionals.

Anthony Pham, Brandon Harkins, Trent Turner and Simpson had a time of 44.54 seconds in the boys' 4x100 relay

The Lady Wardogs' 4x800-meter relay team - Sarah Rhodes, Chelsey Edmondson, Megan Crowell and Amanda Crowell - had a time of 10:53.
