After splitting a non-conference doubleheader at Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa on Thursday, the Northeastern A&M Lady Norse returned to the NEO diamond Saturday with an Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference twinbill against Eastern State College.
Last season, coach Eric Iversonís Lady Norse won the OCAC with a 24-4 record. Veteran coach Andy Mace has guided the Lady Mountaineers to an 0-2 conference record and 1-9 season mark.
The Lady Norse dropped a 7-6 decision to the NOC-Tonkawa Lady Mavericks in the first game Thursday before posting an 8-6 win in the nightcap. With the split, the Lady Norse are 7-3 on the year.
Northern jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the opening game. A walk to Halie Oslin and a single by Vanidee Quinonez started the outburst. After Bridgette Campbell was hit by a pitch, Katie Collette singled, scoring both Oslin and Quinonez. Toni Shurtliff singled with two outs, scoring Collette.
Singles by Megan Taylor and Oslin, along with a sacrifice fly by Quinonez, produced a 5-0 Mavericks cushion in the bottom of the second inning.
NOC-Tonkawa took advantage of a single by Collette, two hit batters and two walks led to a two-run bottom of the third for the Lady Mavs.
With one out in top of the fifth inning, Lindy Fluman walked for the Lady Norse. Megan Sullivan lined a double to right-center, scoring Fluman for NEOís first run.
Singles by Brittany Watson and Miranda Kiser accounted for an NEO run in the top of the sixth inning.
The Lady Norse parlayed singles by Allyson Pogue, Watson, Emily Walters and Fluman into a four-run seventh inning before the game ended with the bases loaded on a fly out to right by Kiser.
Watson led the 12-hit NEO offense with a double and two singles while Sullivan also added a double and two singles.
Trailing 3-1 going into the top of the fifth inning of the second game, the Lady Norse scored three runs in the fifth and sixth and one in the seventh for an 8-5 win.
Candice Monigold led the Lady Norse with a three-run homer while Watson added two singles and scored three runs.
