AFTON — Pitching was the name of the game as Welch nipped Afton 3-1 in a fast pitch softball game here Monday, Aug. 13.

Winning pitcher Olivia Pitcher had 11 strikeouts while walking one and the Lady Eagles’ Taylie Burrow struck out 11 and walked two.

Welch jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Addison Chenoweth walked then stole second, third and home.

The Lady Wildcats pushed the lead to 2-0 in the second when Brennae Perkins doubled, stole third and sprinted home on the play.

Afton cut the lead in half in the fourth on a single by Tomi Betz and a triple by Sidney Huddleston.

The visitors picked up an insurance run in the sixth.

Avery Brannon led off with a double, scooted to third on a passed ball and stole home.

Madison Schaper had a double and single to lead the Lady Cats offensively.

Brannon and Perkins each had a double while Pitcher and Hailey Haskell added singles.

Baily Fields and Betz were Afton’s leaders with a pair of singles.

Huddleston tripled and Burrow and Ragan Hudson each had a base hit.
