Attention area high school football players: your summer is over.

Monday, Aug. 6 is the first day of practice for Oklahoma high school football teams.

Unlike in the past, Miami’s first practice under Zach Gardner will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Red Robertson Field.

Per Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association rules, the first four days of practice are helmet-only.

Friday, Aug. 10 is the first day of full contact practices.

There are five new coaches in the area: Zach Gardner at Miami, Fred Peery at Afton, Zac Ross at Wyandotte, Lee Bluejacket at Bluejacket and David Hindman at Welch.

Returnees are Steve Moss at Commerce, Chris Cawyer at Quapaw and Kent Marshall at Fairland.

Miami’s practice schedule will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, July 6 through Friday, Aug. 10 and Aug. 14 and Aug 16 at Robertson Field and Aug. 13 and Aug. 15 at the same times at the high school.

The Wardogs will have a full pad practice from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 at Robertson Field.

The Aug. 13 practice will be half-shell and the Aug. 16 workout will be helmets only.

The Wardogs will have their only preseason scrimmage at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, against Locust Grove.

That’s because MHS will open its season with a Week Zero game at Claremore Sequoyah on Friday, Aug. 24.

Equipment for the Will Rogers Middle School teams will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, and their first practice will be from 8 to 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16.

The weight room will be open from 7 to 10 a.m. Aug. 6-10 and from 7 to 8 a.m. Aug. 13-17.

Commerce’s first practice will be at 2:50 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as Thursday, if needed, according to Moss.

Wyandotte’s first practice will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, according to Ross.

Quapaw will go from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m. the first four days. They will practice just once on Friday, Cawyer said.

Bluejacket will practice at 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, head coach Lee Bluejacket said.

Scrimmage schedules for Friday, Aug. 17 include Locust Grove at Miami, Chouteau at Fairland, Chelsea at Commerce, Wyandotte at Colcord and Afton at Quapaw.
