FAIRLAND — For not having a home track to work out on, Jessica Roberts is having a good sophomore season for the Fairland Lady Owls.
That, however, is an understatement.
Roberts has broken six FHS records: the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, the 100 intermediate and 300 low hurdles and the pole vault.
And that’s while running around the football field at Fairland High School to practice, coach Deb Brixey said.
Roberts leads the Lady Owls into the Class 2A regional meet, which will be Saturday, April 28, at Stroud High School.
Other Lucky 7 members who have been assigned to the Stroud regional are Afton, Commerce, Quapaw and Wyandotte in 2A and Welch and Bluejacket in Class B.
The most recent record Roberts broke came last week during a meet at Catoosa.
There she won the 200 with a time of 26.41 seconds, erasing the old record of 26.50 set by Misty Wilmoth in 1990.
That’s the third best time statewide in Class 2A, according to the Oklahoma Track Coaches Association website, ohstrack.com.
"Jessica is a very committed and determined track athlete that can achieve any goal that she sets her mind to achieve,” Brixey said.
Other school records Roberts has broken include:
*100 12.55 seconds turned in April 12 at the Miami Invitational. The old record was of the school’s oldest, 12.18 seconds set by Kathy Mills in 1985. That was for a 100-yard event and that converts to 12.99 seconds.
* 400 59.6 seconds, breaking the old record of 60.78 set by Kendra Gibson in 2000.
* 100 hurdles, 16.33 seconds, breaking the old record of 16.50 seconds set by Daphne Robitaille in 2003.
* 300 hurdles, breaking her own record of 49.25 seconds established last season.
* Pole vault, 9-0, eclipsing the old record of 8-3 set in 2003 by Melissa Overacre.
Her time in the 100 is a Class 2A state best while her time in the 100 hurdles is third best and the 300 hurdles performance is the fourth best according to ohstrack.com.
Roberts broke two records during the Lucky 7 Conference track meet Monday, April 23 at Miami.
She won the 100 intermediate hurdles with a time of 15.87 seconds.
That eclipsed the old record of 16.20 seconds set by Keith of Welch at the 1985 meet.
Roberts also set a new record in the 300 low hurdles with a time of 46.92 seconds, surpassing Keith’s time of 48.90 set in 1982.
