RED OAK — Welch is part of the field for a Class A slow pitch softball regional that includes three-time defending state champ and host Red Oak.

The No. 10 Lady Wildcats (20-8) have been paired against seventh-ranked Whitesboro (21-11) in a first-round game at 2:15 p.m.

The hosts (24-8) tackle unranked Webbers Falls (14-10) in the 1 p.m. opener.

Red Oak beat No. 2 Asher 16-4 in the finals last year in Oklahoma City.

The Eagles also captured Class A titles in 2016 and 2012 and a 3A title in 1992.

“If we play well, I feel like we can play with anyone,” Welch coach Ryan Gleaves said. “I know Red Oak is good, but so are we. We’ll need to play well to get to state.”

Welch nailed down its regional berth with an 11-0, 6-5 sweep of Copan in their District 8 tournament Thursday, April 19.

The Lady Wildcats have played seven ranked teams over the course of the season: 6A No. 19 Sapulpa, 5A No. 7 Kellyville, 5A No. 12 Berryhill, 4A No. 18 Wyandotte, 3A No. 15 Fairland and 3A No. 20 Barnsdall.

The two first-round winners meet at 3:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to state.

The losers play a 4:45 p.m. elimination game, followed by the consolation final at 6 with another state tournament berth up for grabs.

Welch scored the deciding run against Copan with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Olivia Pitcher led off the inning with a double. Emily Piercefield singled and Halle Rupert got the run home with an infield hit.

Copan had the tying run on first in the top of the seventh when Sarah singled up the middle with one out.

However, winning pitcher Madisen Horton shut the threat down with a called third strike, then by picking Sarah Owens off at first.

Copan broke out to a 1-0 lead in the first only to have Welch score three times in it’s half of the inning.

The Lady Hornets regained the lead with three in the third, but Welch used a two-run rally in its half of the third to take a 4-3 but Copan tied the game in the top of the fifth.

The Lady Hornets held a 17-16 edge in hits.

Olivia Pitcher headed up Welch’s offense by going 4-for-4 with a three-run homer in the first inning and a double.

Olivia Chenoweth, Ashlee Morgan and Brennae Perkins all had two singles.

Madison Horton doubled and Alex Arnold, Maddi Schaper, Emily Piercefield, Halle Rupert and Jessie Pitcher added singles.

Owens was 4-for-4 for Copan.

Sydney Hawkins went 3-for-3 with a triple and Kolbey O’Rourke had a 3-for-3 effort.

Toni Stewart chipped in with a double and single and Brea Nash added two singles.

Horton blanked the Lady Hornets on five hits.

Welch jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and added five in the second.

The Lady Wildcats tallied single runs in the third and fourth frames.

Olivia Pitcher delivered a two-run home run in the first and a triple.

Arnold contributed a triple and single and Perkins and Horton doubled and singled.

Piercefield collected two singles.

Morgan belted a two-run homer in the first, Madison Gilman doubled and Chenoweth, Taylor Foust and Jessie Pitcher all had singles.
