MIAMI — Scoring all three runs with ground-ball outs, Miami squeezed past Grove 3-2 Tuesday, April 3 at Joe Pollock Field.
That gave the Wardogs a split of their two-game District 4A-8 series with Grove.
The Ridgerunners had posted a 7-1 win Monday, April 2.
“It was a great win for our guys,” Miami coach Jeremy Strack said. “Limiting big innings was huge and Brant Morris really competed on the mound. Our offensive execution was what we needed it to be.
“We also limited our strikeouts, which had been a problem area for us offensively.”
Drew Williams picked up two of the three RBIs with ground-ball outs.
In the fifth, Gabe McCleary and Folks had back-to-back bunt singles then Yoshihiro Shinzato pushed in the deciding run with a grounder.
Miami took a 1-0 lead in the first then both teams scored single runs in the fifth.
Grove had a runner at third in the sixth but couldn’t score.
Then in the seventh, Caleb Keener hit into a fielder’s choice to erase Collin Craig with the second out and then Toby Cearley grounded out to end the game.
Morris turned in a complete-game victory for the Wardogs. He had three strikeouts and walked one.
Conner Womack collected a double and two bunt singles for Miami.
Caden Folks added two singles and McCleary chipped in with a base hit.
Cearley and Keener had two singles each for the Ridgerunners.
Grove 7, Miami 1
Consecutive three-run innings carried the Runners to their Game 1 win.
Miami got its only run in the top of the second when Hunter Hartman scored on a passed ball.
Hartman had led off the inning with a double.
Grove tied the game in the bottom of the second then went up 4-1 in the fourth and got a final three tallies in the fifth.
The Wardogs had only two hits in the game off Grove’s Chat Hayes, who struck out 14 and walked two.
Williams and Hunter Hartman each had a hit for Miami.
The Ridgerunners got two hits each from Tyler Davis, Gentry and Zane Knox.
