MIAMI — Freshman goalie Luke Hackett turned away a critical shot by Grove to give the Miami boys a 2-1 shootout win Tuesday, April 3 at Red Robertson Field.
The Lady Wardogs also went to a shootout, but lost to Grove 3-2.
Both games saw regulation play end 2-2 and both went scoreless in the 10-minute overtime period.
Ryan Hackett, Reagan Allemann, Guillermo Lahoz, Kolton Browning and Shane Herrel all connected for Miami in the shootout.
Miami had gone up 1-0 on a goal by Allemann at 32:10 of the first half, but Grove tied the score in the 15th minute.
The Wardogs (4-6) now have won four of their last five matches after starting the season 0-5.
In the girl’s game, Becca Bell and Shelby Hubbard had the Lady Wardogs’ goals in regulation.
“The girls really played tough,” Lady Wardog coach Kenton Adams said. “A PK in the first half for a hand ball (with 11 minutes left in the half to give the Lady Ridgerunners a 2-1 lead) hurt us.”
Hubbard tied the game at 2-2 with a goal with 14:35 remaining in the half.
Abby Ishmael had the Lady Wardogs’ only goal in the shootout.
Grove connected on three of its penalty kicks.
“You never know what’s going to happen when a game goes into PKs,” Adams said. “We are still having trouble with finishing on our corners and one-on-one chances.”
Miami hosts Oologah on Friday, April 6 in a district clash at Red Robertson Field.
