COMMERCE — Three ranked teams — including two locally — are in the field for the 19th annual Mickey Mantle Classic that runs through Saturday.

Haskell was No. 8, Wyandotte 11th and Commerce 15th, all in Class 2A in last week’s ossaarankings.com.

While it should not be a big surprise, Mother Nature threw out a speedbump Sunday and Monday.

The area picked up .17 of an inch of precipitation during a burst Sunday morning, but tournament director Brian Waybright said in a text that the tarp was down at Mickey Mantle Field.

There had been some concern that Monday’s schedule might have to be moved, but nice weather on Friday and Saturday eliminated that problem.

Fourteen teams are entered this year.

The Comet Division Pinstripe Pool includes Afton, Commerce, Haskell and Sarcoxie, Missouri, and Fairland, the Neosho (Missouri) JV, Quapaw and Wyandotte in the Yankee Pool.

The Triple Crown Division’s Hall of Fame Pool includes Tahlequah Sequoyah, Miami, and Neosho, Missouri, with Diamond and McDonald County, Missouri, and Locust Grove in the Whiz Kid Pool.

Three games were scheduled for Monday — Fairland vs. Neosho JV, 4 p.m.; Sarcoxie vs. Commerce, 6 p.m., and Quapaw vs. Wyandotte, 8 p.m. — and another three on Tuesday — Afton vs. Sarcoxie, 4 p.m.; Haskell vs. Commerce, 6 p.m., and Fairland vs. Wyandotte, 8 p.m.

The schedule on Thursday and Friday will be split between Mantle Field and Joe Becker Stadium in Joplin.

On Thursday at Commerce it will be McDonald County vs. Locust Grove, noon; Miami vs. Neosho, 2:30 p.m.; Neosho JV vs. Quapaw, 4:30 p.m., and Afton vs. Commerce, 7 p.m.

Friday at Commerce will be Sequoyah vs. Neosho, 11 a.m.; Sequoyah vs. Miami, 1 p.m.; Afton vs. Haskell, 4 p.m., and Wyandotte vs. Neosho JV, 6 p.m.

In action at Joplin it will be Sarcoxie vs. Haskell, 4 p.m., and Fairland vs. Quapaw, 6 p.m., on Thursday and Diamond vs. Locust Grove, 4 p.m., and Diamond vs. Locust

Grove, 6 p.m., on Friday.

The schedule on Saturday includes the third-place game in the Comet Division at 10 a.m. and the Triple Crown Division third-place game at noon.

Championship games will be at 2 p.m. (Comet Division) and 4 p.m. (Triple Crown Division).

Three consolation games will be played at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Joe Becker.

Guest speaker Bucky Dent will sign autographs for player at noon Saturday then throw out the first pitch before the Comet Division final.

The awards banquet will be at 7:30 p.m. at First Christian Church in Miami.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance at the field for $20.

Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the banquet begins at 7:30.

There will be live and silent auctions.

Game admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students.

Players use wooden bats that have a special logo and an image of Mantle.

Broken bats are sold as souvenirs for $20 each.

Only 12 dated and numbered bats are sold each year. Cost is $100 each.

The first bat in the series will be raffled at the tournament and No. 7 will be sold in the live auction.
