FAIRLAND — Riley Powell’s two-out single in the bottom of the eighth got the winning run home as Fairland topped 2A No. 8 Wyandotte 5-4 in a high school baseball game here Tuesday, March 20.

The Bears had gone up 3-2 in the top of the sixth on a single by Cole Dixon and a sacrifice by Cody Teal.

An error on a grounder by Jamal Morris allowed Gavin Long to score the tying room in the bottom of the seventh.

Wyandotte regained the lead in the top of the eighth when a two-out grounder by Mike Lawson was misplayed.

Then in the Owls’ half of the eighth, Cody Rice reached on a one-out error but was erased when Thatcher Smalley hit into a fielder’s choice.

Smalley stole second then motored to third on a single to right by Luke Jones.

An error allowed Smalley to score the tying run, and then Powell singled home the game winner.

Long and Smalley collected a double and two singles each for Fairland.

Rice, Lane Gaines and Isaac Matthews had two singles each and Luke Jones and Powell each had a base hit.

Wyandotte’s five-hit attack included two singles by Dixon, a double by Brendan Cooper and singles by Ryan Cooper and Teal.

Wyandotte (5-2) hosts Commerce, Welch, Columbus and Riverton, Kansas, and Seneca in the Bears’ annual festival Saturday, March 24.

Fairland (4-3) is idle until Thursday, March 29, when it faces Quapaw in the first round of the Lucky 7 Conference Tournament at Quapaw.
