MIAMI — The Northeastern Oklahoma A&M softball team got its season started on the right foot with a 9-1 and 15-0 sweep of Labette (Kan.) Community College here Tuesday, Feb. 13.

The sweep leaves Lady Norse coach Eric Iverson four wins away from the 1,000 mark on his career.

Pitchers Olivia Prather, Taylor Makowski and Emily Mendenhall limited the Lady Cardinals to one run and two hits in the twinbill.

Prather struck out eight and walked four in the season opener.

Labette got its only run of the afternoon off Prather in the third inning of a game that was called in the sixth because of the run rule.

Makowsky yielded three hits over 4.1 innings and Mendenhall retired both batters she faced in the fifth.

The Lady Cardinals carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth, when NEO erupted for four runs.

The Lady Norse generated another five in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.

Freshman left fielder Karissa Marshall had three singles to head up an 11-hit NEO attack.

Catcher Gracie Garman added two singles.

Prather, third baseman Bailey Fowler, freshman second baseman Hunter Gilstrap and sophomore Jordan Wharton all had a single.

Labette’s only hit was a double by centre fielder Mikayla Mahlo.

The Lady Norse erupted for 11 runs in the first inning of the nightcap.

They had a pair of two-run rallies in the third and fourth.

Bowman collected a double and three singles for NEO, which also got a homer and single from Marshall, a double and single from Wharton and two singles from Makowsky.

Marissa Lokey tripled, Gilstrap and Lena Sanders doubled and Fowler, Workman and Sammy Gordon all had singles.

The Lady Norse host Iowa Western Feb. 18 in a 2 p.m. double-header at Eric Iverson Field. They travel to Arkansas City, Kansas, on Tuesday, Feb. 20 for a twinbill with Cowley County Community College.
