OKAY — A solid first quarter sent the 17th-ranked Welch girls on their way to a 46-41 win over Okay in the finals of the Class A Area II District 7 basketball tournament here Saturday, Feb. 10.
‘Thank goodness for the first,” Welch coach Shawn Goodwin said. “They did a good job defensively. We didn’t hit any more 3s, but we didn’t shoot that many either.”
Of the Lady Wildcats’ 17 first-quarter points, 12 came on 3-point goals.
“They did a good job defending our posts,” Goodwin said. “They are quick and scrappy. It seemed they had a hand on the ball every touch we had.”
The Lady Mustangs made things interesting by outscoring Welch over the next three quarters, 12-11, 11-10 and 11-8.
“They’re basically an all guard team and can all shoot. They put up a lot of 3s (hitting nine).”
Okay had advanced with a 60-47 over Cave Springs on Friday.
Welch (20-2) picked up 11 points each from Aspen Wood and Hailey Haskell.
Others scoring for the Lady Wildcats were Olivia Chenoweth with eight,
Maddie Schaper and Olivia Pitcher, seven each, and Jaeli Jorgenson, two.
Shayn Green had 14 and Macy Anderson 11 for Okay (5-14).
Boys: Cave Springs 66, Welch 49
Cave Springs eliminated the Wildcats on Friday.
Cave Springs went up 16-13 after one and continued to pull away.
The Warriors (9-15) held a 19-14 advantage in the second quarter then outscored Welch 17-5 in the third period.
The Cats’ offensive leaders were Braxton Turner with 21 points and Trenton Seigel with 20.
Colton Armstrong added six points and Seth Hayward and Gunner Johnson added a free throw for Welch (7-15).
Tye Johnson and Damon Vann scored 18 and 11 for Cave Springs.
The Welch girls face Clayton at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15 in regional play, again at Okay.
