QUAPAW — The Commerce boys squeezed out a 40-38 victory over Quapaw here Friday, Feb. 9.

Quapaw gained a split on the night, claiming a 45-35 decision in the girls’ game.

“We made one more play than they did,” Commerce coach Terry Tyree Jr. said.

The Tigers final bucket was set up by a four-corner set.

“Chris saw a dribble-drive option then Ty’s man helped up,” Tyree said. “Chris made a great pass and Ty finished to put us ahead. The kids kept their composure and finished strong on the defensive end to win the game.”

The boys’ game saw the score flip-flop in the first half.

Quapaw was up 9-6 after one, then the Tigers (12-8) tied the game at 12 in the second quarter.

Commerce held a 13-12 edge in the third period then outscored the Cats (8-13) 15-14 over the final eight minutes.

Hunter Burkybile was the Tigers’ leading scorer with 17 points.

Hayden Moss contributed seven points, followed by Danny Salinas, six; Bryer Chandler and Chris Ibarra, three each, and Ty Jauert and Cruz Munson, two each.

Jonas Gregory and Matt Lovell headed up the Quapaw scoring with 14 and 11, respectively.

Chris Durbin chipped in with seven points.

Kale Thomasson and Caleb Hoffman had two each and Rex Burkybile and Jordan Carolus each had a free throw.

Girls: Quapaw 45, Commerce 35

The Lady Wildcats had led 38-18 heading into the final stanza, when Commerce held a 16-7 advantage.

Quapaw (12-10) was up 11-7 after one and 26-12 at intermission.

The Lady Cats’ scoring leader was Karissa Anderson with 15 points.

Skyler Evans followed her with eight, Jenni Jennings, seven; Lu Attocknie, five; Mya Nichols and Chloe Tyner, three each, and Kelci Schroeder and Ashlynn Owens, two each.

The Commerce (3-13) scorers were River Friel, 13; Ashley Myers, eight; Dawn Convirs, six; Morgan Connell, five, and Marisa Scott, two.

Quapaw is idle until Thursday, Feb. 16, when it begins Class 2A district play at Oklahoma Union.
