WELCH — A layup by Braxton Turner at the buzzer gave Welch a 48-46 overtime victory over Commerce here Monday, Feb. 5.

The Wildcats held a 10-8 edge in overtime to pull out the win.

Welch (7-14) had forced the game into overtime with a 9-8 edge in the fourth quarter.

Commerce (11-7) grabbed a 6-2 lead in the opening frame then the Wildcats cut into the deficit with a 10-8 edge in the second.

The Tigers held a one-point lead (30-29) heading into the fourth.

The game was the second in the last three games for CHS, which beat Foyil in overtime on Jan. 30.

Turner finished with a game-high 17 points for the Cats. Trenton Seigel joined him in double figures with 11.

Colton Armstrong and Gunner Johnson tallied seven each while Nate Beaty and Daniel Windle contributed three each.

Hunter Burkybile and Danny Salinas had 13 and 12, respectively, for Commerce.

Ryan Dunbar netted six, followed by Ty Jauert with four, Oscar Gutierrez with three and Lupe Prado, Bryar Chandler, Hayden Moss and Chris Ibarra with two each.

Girls: Welch 60, Commerce 22

The Class A No. 17 Lady Wildcats wrapped up their regular season with a 19-2 record.

They won 18 games a year ago and 20 in 2015-16 and 2014-15

Welch stretched a 17-6 first-quarter lead into a 34-7 advantage at the half.

The Lady Wildcats held a 12-10 and 14-5 over the final two quarters.

Olivia Chenoweth headed up a balanced Welch scoring attack with 24 points.

Hailey Haskell finished with 10 followed by Aspen Wood, six; Jayci Atwood and Maddie Schaper, five each; Olivia Pitcher, four, and Jaeli Jorgenson, Halle Rupert and Sayler Hayward, two each.

Morgan Connell paced the Commerce scoring with eight points.

The Lady Tigers (3-15) also got five from River Friel, three each from Ashley Myers and Dawn Convirs and one from Jaycie Rhinehart.


Welch travels to Okay for its Class A Area II District 7 tournament. The WHS boys play Cave Springs at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, while the Lady Cats face either Okay or Cave Springs at 6:30 pm. on Saturday, Feb. 10 in the girls’ final.

Weather permitting, Commerce hosted Wyandotte, Tuesday Feb. 6 and travels to Quapaw on Friday, Feb. 9 before closing out the regular season at Afton on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
